The Foundling 1897, Artist Unknown

VIGEE-LEBRUN, ELISABETH LOUISE - FRENCH (1775-1842)

The art by this French Portrait artist is not only beautiful but her history is interesting as well. A beautiful woman in her own right, Vigee Lebrun painted history all over Europe with her prolific paintings of famous people of her time. Her life was like a made for tv movie. A close friend of Marie Antoinette, she had to flee the country during the revolution. She painted many paintings of the Queen and also some portraits that included the favorite court dog, the Cavalier Spaniel. A whole website is dedicated to Vigee-Lebrun and her artwork and is well worth a visit.

"Portrait of Doanmei d'Auguesseau" 1772 - Another one of these odd "exposure" type portraits. There must be a significance here but I can't quite grasp it. Anyway, I think she is detracting from the dog <grin>
